When is a cherry not a cherry?

These funny little things are called "Ground Cherries" or "Cape Gooseberries". they are related to the tomato and taste like a very, very sweet tomato - a bit like a 'tomato-berry' :) They grow in these cute little 'jackets' so the birds don't seem to touch them and they ripen from green to yellow-orange.

They are so yummy, they don't even make it to the house! I'd HIGHLY recommend growing these if you have children and/or a sweet tooth. The plants have been hardy, competed well with the feral tomatoes and are continuing to crop. I must plant more next season.

Ooh! I've always wanted to grow ground cherries. Tomatillos grow in a similar shell, by the way (you probably know that) and make the most authentic salsa.
